Ninth-plate, hand-colored daguerreotype in a thermoplastic Union case of Rebecca Codman Butterfield (born ca. 1825). As a child, Butterfield and her parents were members of Brook Farm, a utopian agricultural community in West Roxbury, Mass. The image was taken by the Plumbe National Daguerrian Gallery in Boston, Mass., ca. 1854.
